The Spiritual Path of Acting

Simone leads CBS’ ALL RISE which is currently the most popular new network show of 2019! She is the first African American woman to lead a series on CBS, and it’s been a huge huge hit for the network. The show is sort of a “Grey’s Anatomy” type of format and follows the lives of judges in Los Angeles.

She will also soon be seen opposite Anthony Mackie in the second season of Netflix’s hit sci-fi anthology drama ALTERED CARBON. As an anthology series, this second season will follow the huuuuugely successful first with all new characters and storylines. Taking place 300 years in the future where society has been transformed by new technology, this season will also set out to solve a mystery. Simone plays Trepp, an expert bounty hunter who is known for her ability to track down anyone… for the right price. She has several layers to her storyline which are revealed along the way (she and her wife have a child, which is crazy expensive to do in the world she lives in, which explains why she is so driven at work). She also has this awesome technology of coils built into her hair which help her see what people are doing (yeah, I know… will have to see it to believe it lol). There isn’t a lot we’re allowed to talk about yet, but… you get the picture.

Simone was most recently be seen as the iconic Marvel character, and television’s history-making first African-American female superhero, Misty Knight on Netflix’s LUKE CAGE. Prior to that, she appeared in ABC’s SCANDAL and in Showtime’s RAY DONOVAN. Additionally, for the role of “Sweet Tea” in The Road Weeps, the Well Runs Dry at the LA Theatre Center; Simone was nominated for the NAACP Best Supporting Actress Theater Award in 2014. Simone studied acting at Howard University and the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, taking master classes with legends like Ben Kingsley, Alan Rickman, and Jane Lapotaire.

The woman is a FORCE. She’s truly impressive and is just blowing people away.

Today we are chatting with Ian Verdun, an actor and playwright, seen most recently on Freeform’s hit show SIREN. Ian was born and raised right here in Los Angeles, and graduated from Cal Arts where he studied acting, and also used much his time away from the stage writing his own plays. Today, he candidly shares his journey, from struggling to pay for school, to grinding in New York with multiple side jobs, all the way to booking his big break on SIREN.

He generously shares his insight on the expanding diversity dialogue within the industry, how things have changed since he was stuck playing bit parts throughout school, and how, as a storyteller, he feels characters can and should be depicted by artists from every background.

Verdun’s past performances have been described as “brimming with grit and honesty” by Backstage, “quirkily charming” by Variety, and “finely nuanced” by LA Weekly. He has also been hailed by Stage Scene LA as the “brightest stage discovery of 2011”.
Ian continues to cut his teeth on the stages of New York and Los Angeles, along with writing and producing several plays himself. After appearing on ABC’s Last Resort, TNT’s Hawthorne and FOX’s Lucifer, Ian threw his energy into his own television creation, Life’s A Drag. Following years of experiencing the lackluster opportunities for diverse entertainers, Life’s A Drag went on to win a number of awards in the burgeoning web festival circuit, including a special award for recognition in diversity.
