Chukwudi Iwuji

Chukwudi Iwuji 1920 960 Alyshia Ochse

Chukwudi is a brilliant, British/Nigerian classically-trained actor who’s versatility has already started paving the way for a bright career ahead. Chukwudi is making his Marvel debut as the big bad villain ‘High Evolutionary’ in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 3, the next installment in the blockbuster franchise, premiering May 5, 2023. GOTG3 is one of the most anticipated films of the year, and Chukwudi’s character is already being deemed as one “who will steal the show in 2023.”

Last year, Chukwudi made his DC debut in the hilariously chaotic DC Comics and HBOMax series PEACEMAKER from the mind of James Gunn. The series was quickly “Certified Fresh” by Rotten Tomatoes. Chukwudi’s portrayal of ‘Clemson Murn’ had him buzzing as one of the biggest breakout stars of 2022.

An accomplished theater veteran, Chukwudi previously starred in OTHELLO for The Public Theatre’s Shakespeare in the Park as well as in ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, KING LEAR, and HAMLET. Chuk’s performance in THE LOW ROAD, directed by Michael Greif, earned him an Obie Award, as well as 2018 Lucille Lortel and Drama League nominations. An Associate Artist of the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company for his numerous Shakespearean performances, he has also received two Olivier awards for his titular role as HENRY VI in the RSC’s 2009 productions of parts I, II, and III.

Other credits include the BBC drama THE SPLIT, Michael Morrissey’s THE GIRL WHO GOT AWAY, and the Amazon limited series THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD for director Barry Jenkins.

The Spiritual Path of Acting

Simone leads CBS’ ALL RISE which is currently the most popular new network show of 2019! She is the first African American woman to lead a series on CBS, and it’s been a huge huge hit for the network. The show is sort of a “Grey’s Anatomy” type of format and follows the lives of judges in Los Angeles.

She will also soon be seen opposite Anthony Mackie in the second season of Netflix’s hit sci-fi anthology drama ALTERED CARBON. As an anthology series, this second season will follow the huuuuugely successful first with all new characters and storylines. Taking place 300 years in the future where society has been transformed by new technology, this season will also set out to solve a mystery. Simone plays Trepp, an expert bounty hunter who is known for her ability to track down anyone… for the right price. She has several layers to her storyline which are revealed along the way (she and her wife have a child, which is crazy expensive to do in the world she lives in, which explains why she is so driven at work). She also has this awesome technology of coils built into her hair which help her see what people are doing (yeah, I know… will have to see it to believe it lol). There isn’t a lot we’re allowed to talk about yet, but… you get the picture.

Simone was most recently be seen as the iconic Marvel character, and television’s history-making first African-American female superhero, Misty Knight on Netflix’s LUKE CAGE. Prior to that, she appeared in ABC’s SCANDAL and in Showtime’s RAY DONOVAN. Additionally, for the role of “Sweet Tea” in The Road Weeps, the Well Runs Dry at the LA Theatre Center; Simone was nominated for the NAACP Best Supporting Actress Theater Award in 2014. Simone studied acting at Howard University and the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, taking master classes with legends like Ben Kingsley, Alan Rickman, and Jane Lapotaire.

The woman is a FORCE. She’s truly impressive and is just blowing people away.

S2 002: Tom Pelphrey 1500 750 Alyshia Ochse

When You’re in the Presence of a Master

Tom was born and raised in New Jersey. He grew up in the town of Howell, where he attended the Fine and Performing Arts Center at Howell High school. Upon graduation, he attended Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University (obtaining BFA in acting), where he also had the opportunity to study Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre in London, England. Tom’s first professional job was on the long running CBS daytime show Guiding Light. During the two and a half years he was on the show, he was nominated for four consecutive Daytime Emmy Awards, winning twice (in 2006 and 2008). Having worked in theater, television, and independent film, he eventually became a series regular on the hit Cinemax show Banshee, playing former neo-Nazi Kurt Bunker. Tom is a founding member and the current Artistic Director of the Apothecary Theatre Company—a NYC-based non-profit that develops and produces world premieres of new plays by up-and-coming playwrights. He made his Broadway debut in 2012 as Judy Garland’s last husband, Mickey Deans, in the critically acclaimed End of the Rainbow, directed by Tony Award Winner Terry Johnson. He can currently be seen in Season 3 of Netflix’s hit original series Ozark, as well as in David Fincher’s Mank, which is being released later this year.

Considering that this interview was done via Zoom (a TOA first), as a means of moving forward in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is befitting that this episode of That One Audition retells the stories of adaptation and triumph that landed Tom Pelphrey right here.

“You do your best work and you keep your head down and trust that if you just keep doing your best work things will work out.”

“These are the people who are the best at what they do and I know for sure that I become a better actor when I’m working with good actors…I will leave this job a better actor than the actor I came in.”
