Perfect is Boring: Winning with Your Imperfections // Lessons in Long-term Relationships With Yourself, Your Art, and Your Team

James Badge Dale is an American actor known for his early work in the 1990 film adaptation of Lord of the Flies, and his roles on the popular Fox TV series 24, HBO’s The Pacific, and AMC’s Rubicon.

James was born in New York City to actress Anita Morris and actor/choreographer Grover Dale. At 10 he was picked out of his 5th grade class in Wonderland Elementary School to play Simon in Lord Of The Flies. After five months on location in Jamaica, he returned to California and took a pause from the industry. He pursued hockey and played as a goalie at Manhattanville College until an injury prevented him from playing. This break from sports re-ignited his passion for acting and he decided to move to NYC to train as an actor.

Since then, and in addition to working on several award-winning TV series, he’s been in multiple feature films including The Departed with Jack Nicholson, Iron Man 3, World War Z, The Lone Ranger, Parkland, and Only The Brave. Currently you can watch him starring as Detective Ray Abruzzo in STARZ’s new crime drama Hightown.

“If you’re acting, it’s not a part time thing—it’s a full-time thing.”

“It’s the only time in life when being reactive is actual damn good.”

“I don’t want to live this way: where my own self-worth as an individual is based on these auditions.”

For today’s conversation, we’re changing things up and taking a look at things on the other side of the camera. We’re chatting with someone who’s made their career writing and directing major hollywood movies for the past twenty years. He’s come a long way from his father’s liquor store in Massachusetts, and he tells us exactly how, after graduating from school and writing a letter to his hollywood idol, he found himself sharing a beer and chatting about his favorite movies with director Sam Raimi! Now, after having directed stars like William H. Macy and Jason Statham, he shares what it’s like sitting in the director’s chair, and how he’s managed to pull off getting films made when seemingly impossible circumstances stand in the way.

Tony Giglio is and American film director born in Medford, Massachusetts. He studied and obtained a B.A. at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. He worked his way up from a Production Assistant to become one of Hollywood’s most versatile Writer-Directors. He gained experience in the entertainment industry on projects like HEAT, IN ENEMY HANDS, TERMINATOR 2, LIAR LIAR, CELTIC PRIDE, BULLETPROOF, DANTE’S PEAK,  and FEAR. Most recently, he has directed DOOM: Annihilation, set to be released in 2019.  Previous films include CHAOS, EXTRACTION, TIMBER FALLS and DEATH RACE.

Lane Garrison accepted a dare in his senior year of high school and auditioned for the chorus line in the school musical. He didn’t get it, but it gave him the confidence to explore that side of himself. A true Texan boy filled with grit and growth he didn’t follow the rules, he only followed the intensity of his calling to make movies. After graduation he followed his instincts and headed west. But it didn’t come easy for Lane, it took over 6 years to get a theatrical agent. Lane didn’t give himself a backup plan, instead he strategized and worked hard to make opportunities happen for himself. After Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Oscar win for Goodwill Hunting, Lane figured his way into the acting world would be to write himself the part. A deal made over a 10 mile run and a game of basketball with Adam Sandler landed him with the biggest agents in Hollywood. Listen in to hear how Lane followed the “clues to his success” landing him in dynamic roles in Quality of Life, Shooter, Camp Xray, Prison Break, Bonnie and Clyde, From Dusk till Dawn, Better Call Saul, and Roots. The role on Roots garnered Lane a Critics’ Choice Award Nomination for “Best Supporting Actor In A Movie Made For Television Or Miniseries.
