Working her way up from an assistant to casting associate to an Emmy-nominated casting director, Jamie Castro has cast numerous film and television projects including “Inventing Anna,” “Scandal,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Station 19” and more. In today’s episode, we cover reasons why an actor might get recast, who usually writes the character breakdowns, and how actors can politely and professionally start to turn down co-star roles when they feel they’re ready to level up to guest stars. As a coach, Jamie knows what makes a strong audition. Offering examples, she shares what it was like watching stars Kerry Washington and Katie Lowes audition for “Scandal” and what made their performances so memorable.

Amanda Schull is an American actress and former ballet dancer, born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. She’s known for her roles in Pretty Little Liars, Suits, 12 Monkeys, and in Nicholas Hyter’s 2000 drama, Center Stage. She began her performing career as a dancer, studying at Indiana University and apprenticing with the San Francisco Ballet, where she ulitmately joined the company after the completion of Center Stage. She retired from dancing in 2006 and has since built a career as an actress. She has also appeared in One Tree Hill, Hawaii Five-0, The Mentalist, Grimm, and Bones.

Her story is full of both personal inspiration and practical tips for managing an artistic career—from walking away from a network test, bombed auditions, and difficult directors, to working on multiple hit TV shows, creating relationships with empowered artists, and learning to trust in her voice, how she stands up for herself and her work, down to her first three steps in an audition.

“Nobody is going to hand you an opportunity without you stepping up to it. You are your own boss right now.”
