A California native, Kelli Garner made her film debut at age sixteen in director Mike Mills’ short film Architecture of Reassurance. Her performance captured the attention of director Larry Clark who cast her in her first feature film, as the drug-addicted teen, Heather Swallers, in the controversial docudrama Bully. Following Kelli earned the role as the 1940’s Hollywood ingénue, Faith Domergue, in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. Soon after, she reunited with Mike Mills for his 2005 Sundance hit Thumbsucker, and following with her first leading roles, starring opposite Tommy Lee Jones in Man of the House as well as the quirky and offbeat comedy Lars and the Real Girl, opposite Ryan Gosling.

On the television side, Garner most recently starred as Kate Ryan on NBC’s The Enemy Within opposite Jennifer Carpenter and Morris Chestnut and gave a knockout performance per Variety as Norma Jean /Marilyn Monroe in Lifetime’s event drama, The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe, also starring Susan Sarandon. Garner co-starred in ABC’s 1960’s airline drama, Pan Am, opposite Christina Ricci , cementing her throwback, vintage appeal, along the way.

Eme Ikwuakor

Eme Ikwuakor (pronounced IK-WALKER) is a triplet, born In Arvada, Colorado and the son of Nigerian parents (his father is a college professor in Nigeria). Attending the University of Colorado on a track and field scholarship, he was considering a sports marketing major until a college advisor recommended an acting course. Ikwuakor signed up and was quickly cast in the part of Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird. It became a life-changing experience. Always fascinated by history and African-American rights issues, Ikwuakor then became heavily involved in the Interactive Theater Project in Colorado, a professional acting troupe that specialized in theater for social change. This experience became a great influence on his career goals. During this period, he was cast in Ink, the critically-acclaimed, locally produced, independent science fiction feature that won Best Colorado Film at the 2009 Denver Film Critics Society awards and was considered “one of the best films of 2009. (JoBlo)” This positive experience taught Ikwuakor a great deal about how to independently produce projects, market and take chances. Arriving in Los Angeles after college graduation with a B.F.A in Performance Theater, Ikwuakor took a series of jobs to support his acting and producing ambitions. His life-changing project, Chance, was a short dramatic film, which he wrote, produced, co-directed and starred in. Its insight encouraged him to drop his day job of three years and focus entirely on his acting career. The first month after quitting his day job he booked roles on Castle, Hawaii 5-0 and a recurring role on Extant with Executive Producer, Steven Spielberg.  Since then, he has never looked back. After those roles, some of Ikwuakor’s television series credits include ABC’s, Marvel’s Inhumans; Starz, Counterpart; and currently recurring on Netflix’s On My Block.  In addition to Ink, he has been featured in the films The New Republic, Murder in the Dark and Not Safe for Work and Concussion. He continues to work actively for social and political change.

Career Pivoting: As We Grow, Our Art Grows

Tyler Labine currently stars on the NBC series New Amsterdam as Dr. Iggy Frome, an attending child psychiatrist who likes to think outside the box but is continually beaten down by the hospital system. The show is a huge hit for NBC and is currently filming its third season. Tyler can also be seen on the new season of the BBC America series Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, starring opposite Elijah Wood and Samuel Barnett as Sherlock Hobbs, the overly enthusiastic small-town sheriff.

Previously, Tyler starred as Kevin Pacalioglu on the Hulu/Lionsgate TV breakout comedy series Deadbeat for three seasons. Prior to Deadbeat, Tyler was a series regular on NBC’s Animal Practice, CBS’ Mad Love, FX’s Sons of Tucson, ABC’s Invasion and The CW’s Reaper. Tyler is also the voice of Hunk on the DreamWorks Animation series Voltron for Netflix.

On the big screen, Tyler has starred alongside Alan Tudyk in the cult classic horror-comedy Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. His additional credits include The Boss, Little Evil, Rise of The Planet of The Apes, A Good Old-Fashioned Orgy and Flyboys. He can also be seen in the independent films Little Star, opposite Analeigh Tipton, Someone Marry Barry and Killing Winston Jones.

Most recently, Tyler can be seen in Sony Pictures feature film Escape Room, produced by Neal H. Moritz and Ori Marmur, starring opposite Logan Miller, Deborah Ann Wall and Taylor Russell. The film opened in theaters last year.

The Improv Dream: ‘Yes, And-ing’ Yourself.

This week’s guest caught the improv bug in college and hasn’t looked back since. Rebekka Johnson began her on-screen career putting her comedy skills to good use in an MTV prank show called Boiling Point. Since then she’s been a writer, producer, director, and actress—all in the name of making an audience laugh.

She shares with us how creating the work she loves with her best friends and collaborators has lead her to countless opportunities to shine. From an audition opposite Kristen Wiig, to finally booking her series regular role in GLOW, her story is an example of an artist who puts in the work and doesn’t give up, even when success feels impossible. From negotiating her own contract for a pilot, to how her years of grinding and preparation has empowered her to step into her strength and be fearless in her comedy.

Best known for her work in the musical comedy trio The Apple Sisters and on Netflix’s wrestling comedy GLOW, Rebekka Johnson has performed in various sketch and improv shows across the country for over 10 years, including The Neutrino Video Projects which was an official selection at the HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen. She is a co creator of the award winning Apple Sisters which performed in the 2008 Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. Rebekka voiced many characters in the upcoming Comedy Central animated series, Ugly Americans. She currently performs with Bandit, a Mainstage Harold Team at IO West and recently directed her comedy film, CONSENT.
